Spring has officially sprung, and that means it’s time for one of our favorite events of the year: Spring Photo Day at All Superstars Preschool!
We know that getting your little one ready for pictures can feel like a daunting task, especially when you’re juggling the busy morning rush. Whether you have a newly-walking one-year-old or an independent four-year-old, we’ve put together this handy guide to help you prepare your child for a fun, stress-free photo session.
Styling for Our Spring Backdrop 🌿
This year, our photographer, Mr. Richard has selected a gorgeous, bohemian-inspired backdrop. It features a beautiful, soft beige arched wall surrounded by lush green tropical plants in natural wicker and woven baskets. Below is an example for a styling guide, but we all know he will add all sorts of fun items for the children to interact with.

What to wear? To complement these warm, earthy tones without clashing, we recommend a color palette that includes:
Earth Tones & Neutrals: Cream, ivory, warm tan, or soft camel.
Soft Greens: Sage, olive, or mint will pull from the beautiful plants in the set.
Warm Pastels & Pops of Color: Dusty rose, peach, muted mustard yellow, or a soft navy blue for contrast.
Pro Tip: Try to avoid bright neon colors, large graphic logos, or overly busy patterns, as they can distract from your child's adorable face!
Prepping by Age Group
Preparing a toddler for photos is very different from preparing a preschooler! Here is how to approach the day based on your child's age:
For the Little Ones (Ages 1-2): At this age, it's all about keeping things comfortable and familiar.
Keep it low-pressure: Don't worry about explaining the whole process. Just tell them they are going to play with a new friend who has a fun camera.
Comfort is key: Make sure their outfit isn't itchy or restrictive. If they aren't comfortable, their expressions will show it!
For the Older Kids (Ages 3-5): Children in this age group understand much more and usually love being involved in the process.
Let them choose: Lay out two photo-approved outfits and let them make the final choice. They will be much more excited to wear an outfit they "picked" themselves.
Talk about the process: Explain what the backdrop will look like and that the photographer will ask them to sit or stand in a special spot.
Tips for Natural Smiles 😁
Instead of practicing the word "cheese" (which often leads to a forced, tight-lipped grimace!), practice using funny words at home. Ask them to say "Monkey!" "Applesauce!" or "Stinky toes!" when you point your phone at them. Real giggles make for the absolute best portraits.
What If My Child Gets Scared?
Please, take a deep breath and know this: it is completely okay if your child is nervous! Walking up to a strange setup with bright flashing lights, big umbrellas, and a photographer they don't know can be an intimidating process for a little one. Please be reassured that Mr. Richard is incredibly patient, experienced with this age group, and will spend as much time as possible helping your child feel safe and comfortable. If there are tears, we will gently comfort them. Sometimes the serious, thoughtful faces turn out to be the most cherished photos anyway!
Tips for Siblings 👫
If you have more than one child attending our preschool, sibling photos are incredibly sweet!
Coordinating, not matching: Instead of putting them in the exact same outfit, pick 2-3 colors from the palette above and weave them through both outfits (e.g., sister in a sage green dress, brother in a cream shirt and navy pants).
Consolidate the effort: Parents, hear this! If your children are in different age groups/classes, you do not need to dress them up on two separate days. You can choose one of their scheduled dates to have them photographed together so you only have to get them dressed up once! Just let their teachers know which day you are choosing.
How to Remember It's Photo Day!
We know mornings are hectic, and the last thing you want is to arrive at drop-off and realize you forgot it was picture day!
Bring the outfit early: Feel free to bring your child's photo outfit in a labeled bag a day or two early and hand it to their teacher. If things get chaotic on photo morning and they arrive in play clothes, we will have their nice outfit ready to go and will change them before their session!
Watch for the sticker: We will be putting a reminder sticker on your child's shirt the day before their scheduled session so it's top of mind when they come home.
